Heavy objects should be placed in a lower ground, secure bookshelves and other furniture that can easily fall.

Have an emergency kit which includes flashlight, small radio, extra batteries, whistle.  Place them where it can easily  be accessible to all.

Replace halogen and incandescent bulbs with fluorescent to minimize fire risk.

In every emergency situations, always try to maintain presence of mind and be calm.

Turn off electrical main switch and valves during an earthquake.

I think it's pretty weird how there have been so many quakes/tsunami's lately, very eerie. Good article, hopefully these huge quakes will stop soon and stop hitting places all over the planet, doing so much damage and killing people. You're right, all we can do is try to be prepared in case it hits us here in the U.S. or anywhere else, scary to think about.
